Our Impact

Quality Education

We have a variety of educational programs that meet the needs of children young enough to attend pre-school and advanced enough to attend college.

Pathway to Change Program in Nicaragua

Hand in Hand launched its Pathway to Change Program in 2005 with just three students. The program has grown to include 90 children ages six to sixteen, who are provided with everything they need to thrive in a private school setting. Books, uniforms, tuition assistance, tutoring, English classes, and family counseling are essential ingredients for academic success.

Parents are very involved and proud to have their kids in the program. They commit to the care and supervision of their child’s schoolwork and provide symbolic monthly payments to maintain their child’s enrollment in the program. Our Children’s Center provides a welcoming space for:

  • Daily Tutoring
  • Reading Support
  • A Children’s Lending Library
  • Lots of fun & creative kid’s activities
  • Regular Meetings with parents

After finishing high school, our students attend college and/or begin their professional careers. We keep in contact with our graduates and often provide financial assistance for their university studies.

Sponsoring a Student

Sponsoring a Pathway to Change student is an excellent way to get involved with our program. Full sponsorship costs $2,000 per year and covers the cost of tuition, uniforms, books, school supplies, transportation, nutritional support, counseling, family support services, and English classes.

It is a comprehensive educational program designed to open the door to a different life for our students and their families. Sponsors receive quarterly reports on their sponsored child’s academic progress and are encouraged to correspond with their child through our Hand in Hand staff.

If you would like to learn more about becoming a child sponsor, please contact Tandee Ogburn, [email protected].

Educational Programs in Belize

The Fowler Community Center is home to our daycare, pre-school, and scholarship assistance program.

We operate morning and afternoon preschool classes. Children receive instruction, nutritional snacks, and frequent visits from our immersion trip program. In addition, we operate a day care center for younger children and those in pre-school who need extended care.

The Scholarship Assistance Program was started in 2004 with five students. We are currently assisting 21 high school students. We work with determined students who have the desire to finish high school, and face financial challenges that make it difficult for them to continue their studies.

The average annual cost of a high school education in Belize City is $1,000. Our program provides a partial scholarship of $250 to help with tuition, books, uniforms, and school fees. Our scholarship students participate in tutoring sessions and are required to do community service. Many of our students are high achievers who graduate with honors. Some have been Valedictorians.

Many of our students continue their studies beyond high school, others have found successful careers. Hand in Hand is proud to have been an agent of change in helping to make a difference in the lives of these young people.

Cultural Immersion

We host dozens of school groups each year in our immersion trip program. We host groups of middle school, high school, and college students from several states in the US. Whether they join us for a day, a few days, or a week, they learn new skills, encounter unique cultures, and provide valuable service for those in need. Our hope is that these young people will gain confidence and compassion, equipping them to make the world a better place as they become adults.

We also attract a lot of lifelong learners – adults with a desire to help others and explore new places.

We’re never too old to learn.
